UPDATE: Check out our new v2.0 intro to OBD2!

What is OBD2? What are OBD2 PIDs? And how to log OBD2 data?
https://www.csselectronics.com/pages/obd2-explained-simple-intro

In this basic intro to OBD2 we go through the basics, data logging, PIDs and more!

OBD (On Board Diagnostics) is the vehicle's self-diagnostic system. It allows for a standardized method for accessing various data, diagnostic trouble codes and more from cars, medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. In practice, the OBD2 protocol allows a mechanic to use e.g. an OBD2 scanner or code reader to identify the underlying issues behind a lit malfunction indicator light (MIL). But OBD2 is also relevant as a source of real-time vehicle data for use in e.g. fleet management, fuel optimization, CAN sniffing and more.

In this video and the article, we in particular focus on the data logging part of OBD2 - how is a message structured, what is an OBD query / request vs. a response message, what are OBD2 PIDs and much more. We do so through concrete examples like Vehicle Speed and RPM to make it easy to understand.

Alonzo Mart : The does not try to be funny or goof around, he just give you straight talk about the obd scan tool, good video.
Jason Naylor : Well done.  All I wanted was to see an overview of how to use the diag tool, and this is the best video I have come across.
Whatsreallygood Smith : "Its a really easy process you just wait for the computer to do its work"

I felt like that son who didnt listen to his dad the 1st time he showed him
Great video though
Gloss FX : Awesome video and presentation. Learned a lot about the onboard diagnostics! Thanks buddy.
Ristube : Thanks for making a video with only the needed info, it’s nice to see someone help without the dumbass-ed people with the “make sure to click subscribe etc” bs.
It’s amazing that so few can create anything useful because they all have to be Youtube stars.
Thank you again sir, please continue to lead by example.

Antonio : So he reviews a "TryAce SR950" But says it's a "SeekOne 860" Or did you review both at the same time LOL
John Halchishick : These are all a good source of information. The best one's are hooked into a lap top and you can really both investigate it's info and control your cars actions for testing.
Ana Madigan : Thank you for the time you took to review these OBD2 scanners. I have yet to decide which one I will get, but wanted to let you know that two of the ones you reviewed are discontinued by Amazon. The Seekone SK860 and the Nexpeak NX501. Also wanted to double check. Is there one that can scan several vehicles as we have 3 in our family. Stay well.
Beast : Too bad you can not be as detaitaled about the what they scan in detail as much as the dementions, that are pretty much useless.
Cornelius Engelbrecht : I would not compare the Autel AP200 with these other basic scanners. It is a professional tool and covers Special functions like Service Reset, Injector Coding, Millage Programming etc all at the little price of USD70, which should make it the best tool of the bunch you tested
